Irony

To me, this is the ultimate irony, watching C-SPAN showing people dancing to different songs between speakers. This was the first song I saw, around 8:30 pm EST on Wednesday night,

Everyday people - Sly and the Family Stone

Yes, Everyday People - a great song and really fun dance song. But here are the lyrics to Everyday People:

http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/s/sly_and_the_family_stone/everyday_people.html

Sometimes I'm right then I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my songs
A butcher, a banker, a drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in
I am everyday people

There is a blue one who can't accept
The green one for living with a
black ones tryin' to be a skinny one
Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby dooby
Ooh sha sha
We gotta live together
I am no better and neither are you
We're all the same whatever we do
You love me you hate me
You know me and then
Still can't figure out the bag I'm in
I am everyday people
There is a new man
That doesn't like the short man
For being such a rich one
That will not help the poor one
Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on scooby dooby dooby
Ooh sha sha
We got to live together
There is a yellow one that won't
Accept the black one
That won't accept the red one
That won't accept the white one
Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and
Scooby dooby dooby
Ooh sha sha
I am everyday people

Based on the bolded lyrics and knowledge of the times of this song, it seems to be to be railing against the estabishment and their narrow mindedness about different people and different lifestyles. Not exactly what I think of when I think of modern Republicans, especially the Evangelical base. And then there is the very first line of the song - Sometimes I'm right then I can be wrong- when was the last time Republicans admitted they were wrong?

The next few songs -
Stray Cat Strut - a song about long haired freaks out dancing and acting tough
Footloose - Theme song from a movie about what - breaking out against an oppressive religous leader so they can dance. Have you heard of Republicans fighting against Religous Orthodoxy in order to dance?

Then Carly Fiorina came on to speak - she is the poster child for Republicans. She took over HP, engineered a terrible invasion, oops, sorry, merger of Compaq, then was forced out in disgrace by the board, but not before taking millions with her.

And they have no concept of the irony.

Crushes, Tigers and Notes

I really need to start coming up with the title after I write the post, because I rarely have a good title before I start.

Song: Five Years by David Bowie 4 stars

A few days ago I was trashing Jason Grilli (almost typed Steve for some reason, his father) about being very ineffective this year. After his performance tonight and last night, I was ready to come post about how well he had been pitching, so I would only be disappointed with Ledezma. Guess what happened next, Mesa comes out and brings the Angels back into the game. The number of disappointing pitchers has not changed, just the names. Great job by Grilli and Byrdak.

Song: Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash - 5 stars

I think I am going to develop an unhealthy crush on Amy Sedaris. She's just so adorable and damn funny. I have liked her for a while, but just watched her Conan episode last night and thought it was right. Now, this does not affect my other unhealthy crush on Lauren Graham (see posts in the keyword listing to the right). Since I will never have contact with either woman, I have enough unrequitable love for the both of them. I wish I would get more ambitious and finish a few of the screen play ideas so I would have a reason to send them a script. Just as much of a fantasy, trust me.

Song: Garden of Eden by Guns 'N' Roses - 5 stars

So back to Amy. Whenever I have seen her on Conan, I she always seems to overdress, wearing a short cocktail type dress that seems old -fashioned but looks great. Here is a picture of it (I hope) at this link. Not being a fashion person, I don't know how to describe it. Ok, its not that I am not a fashion person, it is that I haven't dated much - you happy? I said it.

Song: Honey Don't by The Beatles - 1 star (since on BBC recordings, ask me about it some other time - cool song.

So Amy - if you ever do a vanity Google search, I hope this comes up and I wish you lots of success and all the acting work you want from your role in Shrek the Third.

Other notes: I have been to the gym for five straight days. I need to go tomorrow so I can take Friday off from the workouts. It's only treadmill, but still, the body has to rest.

Song: Til the End of the Day by The Kinks - 3 stars, but rethinking that. I have been on a Kinks /Ray Davies kick lately, and listening more to the 3 or 4 cd's I have of theirs.

Another book on the Daily Show I would like to read, The Age of Abundance - How Prosperity Transformed America's Politics and Culture by Brink Lindsey. This is a discussion of America's prosperity since WWII has changed the dynamics of the culture, since it is the first time there has been a generation that has taken food, shelter clothing for granted because they have always been there, whereas most societies (historically) were driven by trying to obtain these basics. Sounds fascinating.

Anyway, I need to go to bed, night.

P.S. The title has changed - from Wednesday night to Crushes, Tigers and Notes. Little more interesting.

Daily Thoughts

Thought I would simply leave this open while at work and post occasional thoughts to it.

I watched The Daily Show last night (from Tuesday) and the guest was Zbigniew Brzezinski promoting his new book Second Chance: Three Presidents and the Crisis of American Superpower. When Jon Stewert started reading his bio, I thought, "This is going to be one smart dude." He is. Incredibly intelligent and capable of bringing across really difficult ideas. His attitude was, "Why yes, I am incredibly brilliant and the highest authority in this subject. Would you like me to explain it to you?"

After his discussion, I wondering if there has ever been a sales bump from appearing on the Daily Show. There are so many books I want to read after hearing about them from this show, but I don't get around to it.

11:30 - Listening to All Songs Considered from NPR (from 2/22/07) and they are talking to Lily Allen. Never heard of her, but she and her music sound interesting. The thing I like about this show is they usually focus on a guest and play some of their favorites and influences. Good show.

Update: 1:50 Just got back from a long lunch at Loco's so we could watch a little hoops. I don't think there will be a whole lot of work done this afternoon. Old Sheilaleighs (sp?) has a few huge tents.

2:09 PM - Uriah Heep - Stealin' I have mentioned it before, but "Stood on a ridge and shunned religion", regardless of how you feel about it, is a great line.

4:31 PM - Done very little useful work today. Winthrop beat Notre Dame. I knew I should have gone with my heart and not taken ND. What was I thinking.

Hello again and Winter Blast

Hello again, it's been a few months since I posted, but I thought I would try a little.

First: Current Song - Wandrin' Star - Lee Marvin from Paint Your Wagon Soundtrack - 4 stars

Few interesting things - last night I went with my friend Kathy (and we met her friends Kate and Lisa) down to the Detroit Winter Blast - and we had a blast. Sorry, had to use it.

At the Michigan Lottery stage, I watched ? and the Mysterians just rock the heck out of the place. I tell you what, if you like having a good time, like mid-sixties rock done right, with some soul and R&B, check these guys out. You can't take your eyes off of ?, he is so dynamic on stage. On the link above, you will see information regarding how to help ? out since his house burned down in January. Once you see him live, you will want to help. It's hard to say it more, go see him.

Kathy and her friends went and saw a Zydeco band that she said was pretty good.

Current Song - Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary - 4 stars

Later, one of my new favorites bands, although I had seen them years ago, but I am now digging them a lot more, got on staged and blew the flaps of the tent, The Twistin' Tarantulas. They play fun, dancable Rockabilly, with some heavier stuff thrown in, like covering Blitzkreig Bop and Ace Spades. Just watching Pistol Pete on the upright bass is nearly worth the price of admission, but the guitar player, who looks 16 years old and Pete says he is still 15, is astounding. Unfortunately, I can't remember his name. Pete, update the web page for his name, especially when he turns 16. I would feel guilty if I didn't mention the drummer, but not that much - just kidding, he provides a great backbone for the guys to run with the music.

There was a lot of people downtown, and we hung out in the food tent (mashed potatoes in martini glasses from one booth, hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps from another - I spose if I was a better, more responsible blogger, I would have gotten names better). Then we hit the Town Pump, which had a live blues band (who need to learn not to screech the mike as much) and was pretty busy. Eye candy was top notch.

Anyway, great night

Current Song - Stand Up Comic - Ray Davies, from CD Other People's Lives - 4 stars

Well, it appears my laundry is done, see you again soon
